Ultrasound
An ultrasound is a safe, harmless diagnostic test what works by transmitting sound waves into your body. There, they travel until they reach a boundary between different types of tissue, bone, or fluid and then bounce back, producing an image.
With a conventional ultrasound, the image is displayed in thin, flat sections. 3D ultrasounds, on the other hand, provide a more detailed look at internal organs and, during pregnancy, a clearer look at a growing fetus.
Ultrasound is most often associated with obstetric care to monitor fetal health and development. However, ultrasound is also used for other medical purposes such as:
- Exploratory examinations
- Locating tumors and growths
- Detecting blocked arteries
- Diagnosing vascular problems
- Identifying problems in the gallbladder, kidneys, liver, pancreas, prostate, kidneys, and testicles
