One of the greatest achievements in medicine was the introduction of medical imaging for health screening. Since the late 1800s, we have had imaging technology, which has enabled doctors to look for issues inside a patient’s body without having to perform an invasive operation.
One of the major benefits of medical imaging is the ability to conduct preventive health screening, which is performed proactively rather than reactively. Examples of preventive screening are mammograms, which allow your doctor to detect breast cancer long before there are any symptoms or lumps.
Preventive health screenings may be conducted via various imaging techniques. Let’s talk about some of the imaging services we offer here at Starling Diagnostics:
3D Mammograms
Mammograms are special X-ray imaging tests that are designed to be specific to the breast. At Starling Diagnostics, our 3D mammograms can create a three-dimensional image of the breast by combining multiple breast X-rays.
A 3D mammogram is therefore more detailed than traditional 2D mammograms, allowing us to detect dense breast tissue for signs of breast cancer. If you are at risk of breast cancer, or if you are at a certain age, your doctor may recommend that you undergo a mammogram.
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
MRI is an imaging test that is commonly used for the brain or spinal cord. It uses a magnetic field and computer-generated radio waves to create an image of your organs and tissues; no radiation is used in an MRI.
An MRI can detect aneurysms, eye and ear disorders, stroke, tumors, multiple sclerosis, and spinal cord problems. If you are at risk of developing any of these conditions, or if you already have a condition, and your doctor wants to prevent further progression, you may need to have an MRI.
CT Scan (CAT Scan)
A CT (computed tomography, or computerized tomography) scan is another imaging procedure that uses X-ray technology to capture images of your internal structures from different angles. It produces a detailed, cross-sectional image of the organ or soft tissues in question.
As a preventive health imaging service, CT scans are used in lung cancer screening. It can also be used to check for skeletal injuries, internal organ problems, infections, and heart disease.
Ultrasound
Another preventive health screening service offered at Starling Diagnostics is ultrasound. People often associate ultrasound with pregnancy, but ultrasounds are also used for preventive screening purposes – including checking for issues in the following areas:
- Arteries
- Kidneys
- Gallbladder
- Pancreas
- Prostate
- Liver
- Testicles
Ultrasound tests use sound waves rather than radiation. The sound waves travel through the body and between different tissues, bouncing back to produce real-time images.
