Radiography comes under radiology, which is a branch of medicine that uses imaging technology to diagnose and treat diseases and injuries.
Radiography is a medical imaging technique that allows healthcare professionals to visualize the internal structure of the body without the need for making an incision into the body. Radiography usesvarious technologies to visualize the bones, organs, and other structures of the body.
In this blog, we explore the three most common types of diagnostic imaging techniques: X-rays, CT scans, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRIs).
X-Rays
X-ray is one of the oldest medical imaging techniques that use a safe amount of electromagnetic radiation (X-rays) to create a picture of the bones and soft tissues. While X-rays are most commonly used to diagnose fractures, they can also help radiographersand other healthcare professionals diagnose a wide range of diseases, disorders, and injuries.
X-rays are safe for people of all ages, meaning even babies can get an X-ray. However, X-rays are not recommended for pregnant women as they may be harmful to unborn babies.
There are several types of X-ray studies, including dental X-rays, fluoroscopy, CT scan, and mammograms.
CT Scans
Computed tomography (CT) is a type of imaging test that uses a series of X-rays and a computer to show the structures inside the body. Compared to X-rays, a CT scan provides a clearer and more precise view of the internal structures of the body, including bones, muscles, organs, and blood vessels. A CT scanner takes dozens to hundreds of pictures of the body by revolving around the body. These pictures are then sent to a computer, which produces a 3D image of the structures of the body.
A CT scan can be used with or without contrast material. A contrast material or a dye is a substance that highlights certain areas of the body on the scan.
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
Magnetic resonance imaging uses radio waves to produce detailed images of almost every internal structure in the human body, including blood vessels, muscles, organs, and bones.
MRI scanners use a large magnet and radio waves to produce images of the body that giveyour healthcare provider important information in diagnosing an injury or disease and planning a course of treatment.
The magnetic field created by the magnets of the MRI scanner temporarily realigns the water molecules in the body. These aligned water molecules produce faint signals under the influence of radio waves. These signals are used to create cross-sectional images of the body.
The MRI scanner produces a 3D image that can be viewed from different angles to make an accurate diagnosis and design a course of treatment.
For people who have difficulty lying in a confined space or who are claustrophobic (afraid of confined spaces), an open MRI is recommended, which is an alternative to traditional closed MRI. Unlike traditional closed MRI, open MRI does not surround the patient’s body with a scanning machine, which can help reduce the feeling of claustrophobia and anxiety during the scan.
